Serralves Em Festa_Cozinha Em Obras_Collaboration With Luiza Leitao

Collaboration with Luiza Jimenez Leitão

During the Worm Winter Festival 2022 Luiza choreographed an artistic intervention in the foyer of the CCOP building, in Porto,

The durational performance included amplified metal plates, on which candles with embedded nails were placed. She lit the candles, and one by one the nails started to drop onto the amplified metal plates, as the wax melted. This was a beautiful reminder of the power of accumulative time, in a durational performance, shifting focus from time as a measurable matter into a space of action.

She approached me to extend this performance as part of the Cozinha em Obra program, presented on Saturday, June 3, during the Serralves em Festa festival, as an interactive piece that included some of her own recorded soundscapes, as well as her interaction with the candles as they melted. We used live inputs from contact microphones attached to each plate, as well as triggering some recorded samples of nails hitting the plates to augment the sense of the space.

The overall experience merged performance with site-specific work, allowing the tiny sounds of the nails hitting the plates to reverberate and echo in the hall where the performance took place.

from the artist:
“A durational installation that proposes a meditative device that puts rationality to sleep and awakens the subconscious and subjectivity. It spontaneously builds a soundscape that ends when the last nail falls and the last candle is consumed by fire.”
